About me
I started doing lettering and logos as a little kid, not realizing those were even things that people did as a job—I just really enjoyed drawing/stylizing words
and letters.
In high school I got my first job in a screen printing shop. I got to design shirts and signage and anything else people wanted. I was getting paid to do art and that was SUPER EXCITING!
I did this sign for the place where I had my first design job. It looks retro now, but I did that in 1984(ish) and it was really cutting-edge then!
Right after college, getting a job doing design work wasn’t happening for me or my girlfriend at the time, so we started our own business, Modern Dog, which we ran for nearly 30 years.
As Modern Dog, we started with a focus on the Seattle arts scene and did posters and programs for most of the live theatre companies. From there we branched out into music, recreation, advertising, fashion and more.
Eventually retiring Modern Dog, I found myself working in-house at the Seattle Aquarium (a former Modern Dog client) for 12 years—while also managing a small but steady stream of freelance work on the side. There are many Modern Dog and Seattle Aquarium pieces on my website. Now I’m back out on my own, living in Olalla on the amazing Kitsap Peninsula, and excited to be designing full-time for a variety of local clients again. I love design.
